Physio Pilates and exercise physiologist led Pilates are great ways to move your body, but choosing the right class truly matters. For many women, the difference between a standard class and a physio-led class is the difference between feeling unsure and feeling completely supported.
At North West Healthy Women, our Pilates classes are designed and led by women’s health physiotherapists to create a safe, supportive environment where every movement is intentional and tailored.
How Pilates supports women’s health and recovery
Pilates is beneficial for women across all seasons of life. For those recovering from illness, injury or pregnancy, or returning to exercise after a period of inactivity, Pilates provides a structured way to reconnect with the body. Many women find that they’ve lost awareness of how they move, how their muscles activate or how their breath supports their core, especially after childbirth, prolonged stress, or periods of reduced activity and movement.
Women often report feeling taller, more grounded and more connected to their bodies after Pilates. Pain and dysfunction tend to ease as posture improves, strength builds and movement patterns become more balanced. Over time, women regain confidence not just in the studio, but in daily life, with things like lifting, carrying, returning to sport or simply moving through the day with greater comfort and ease. Pilates is an excellent entry point for women returning to exercise and preparing to transition into higher-intensity activities such as running and heavy weight lifting.
What is Pilates and what makes North West Healthy Women Pilates different?
Pilates is a form of exercise that emphasises controlled movement, breath, stability, strength, alignment and body awareness. Through deliberate, mindful movement, Pilates helps the body work as an integrated system rather than relying on individual muscles to compensate or overwork.
What makes our Pilates unique is that every session is designed and led by women’s health physiotherapists or exercise physiologists. This means the exercises you perform are chosen for clinical benefit rather than intensity, trends or aesthetics. A physio-led approach ensures the movements support pelvic floor health, spinal alignment, muscle balance, breathing patterns and functional movement.
Small class sizes allow our physios and exercise physiologists to observe each woman closely, offer real-time technique correction and tailor movements to suit individual needs.
Physiotherapists and exercise physiologists have extensive understanding of injuries, movement mechanics, pelvic health, pain science and women’s health conditions. They can recognise when a movement needs modification, when a body is compensating or when a woman may benefit from a different approach.
What Pilates classes does North West Healthy Women offer?
The North West Healthy Women clinic is in Everton Park and we offer three exercise-physiologist and physio-led Pilates streams that support women through all stage of life, including pregnancy and postpartum recovery. Each program is intentionally designed to be safe, adaptable and deeply supportive.
Prenatal Pilates provides gentle, strengthening movement for mums-to-be. These classes help women feel supported through every trimester, with a focus on breath awareness, pelvic floor connection, mobility and preparing the body for birth. Moves are selected to ease common discomforts, improve stability and maintain a sense of calm strength as the body changes.
Postnatal Pilates offers a soft place to land after birth. Many women feel disconnected from their core and pelvic floor in the early weeks and months postpartum, regardless of whether they had a vaginal birth or a caesarean. These classes help rebuild strength after birth, gradually and safely, with attention to healing tissues, posture, breath, movement control and overall wellbeing. Babies are welcome, creating a nurturing environment for both mother and child.
Reformer Pilates at North West Healthy Women suits women of all ages, all fitness levels and all stages of recovery or return to exercise. It is a controlled, resistance-based form of strength training that supports joint health, improves muscle balance and builds confidence for women who may be returning from injury, illness, stress or long periods of inactivity. The exercises can be easily adjusted to meet each woman where she’s at, creating a sense of safety and progression without pressure.
All classes are capped at six participants to ensure each woman receives hands-on feedback, individualised modifications and guidance that supports her goals.
Who benefits most from exercise physiologist and physio-led Pilates (and who might prefer a traditional class)
Physio/Exercise physiologist-led Pilates is designed for women who want to become stronger, more conditioned, and more confident with movement. Sessions emphasise progressive loading, muscular endurance, and whole-body strength to support a return to higher-intensity activities such as running, gym training, or sport.
Physio/Exercise physiologist-led Pilates is particularly helpful for women who are returning to movement after a break, whether due to pregnancy, birth, illness, stress or injury. Many women come to us feeling unsure of what their body can handle or worried about aggravating symptoms. Others arrive with a desire to reconnect with movement after years of sedentary habits or long recovery periods. Some have never exercised before and are seeking a gentle, guided entry point that feels safe rather than overwhelming.
Women who experience pain, stiffness, weakness, pelvic health symptoms or lingering postnatal changes, often find physio-led Pilates offers the level of support they have been missing. The slower pace, careful cueing and personalised corrections help rebuild confidence in a way that feels sustainable.
A traditional Pilates class may suit women who already feel confident in movement, have prior exercise experience and have minimal injury or pelvic health concerns. These women may enjoy a faster-paced or more fitness-focused style of class.
Both paths are valid. Pilates through North West Healthy Women simply offers a safer, more supportive environment for women who want guidance, reassurance and a personalised approach as they rebuild strength.
Do participants need an assessment before joining?
Yes, and the assessment process is an important part of what makes our Pilates so safe and personalised.
Your initial assessment gives us the opportunity to get to know you, understand your goals and discuss any concerns, previous injuries or health conditions we need to be aware of. We take time to observe how your body moves, how your muscles activate and how your posture supports or compensates during everyday activities.
During the assessment, we also teach the Pilates basics, introduce you to the equipment and help you understand how breath and movement work together. This creates a solid foundation and ensures you enter your first class feeling familiar, comfortable and confident.
Some women may benefit from a few one-on-one sessions before joining a group class, especially if they are experiencing significant pain, recovering from birth or wanting extra guidance. This recommendation is always collaborative and supportive rather than prescriptive.
