Post Menopause

As your body adjusts through menopause, thoughtful movement and care can make day to day life easier and more in tune.

Once twelve consecutive months have passed without a period, a woman is considered postmenopausal.

For many, the late stages of perimenopause and the first years after menopause can bring noticeable physical changes. Hot flushes, night sweats, and sleep disturbances may continue, while reduced oestrogen levels can affect bone density, muscle strength, joint mobility, and pelvic floor function. These shifts can impact comfort, confidence, and overall wellbeing.

At North West Healthy Women, our women’s health physiotherapists offer gentle, evidence-based support to help you move, feel, and live more comfortably through all stages of menopause.

How physiotherapy supports menopause and postmenopausal health

Staying active during perimenopause and after menopause is one of the most powerful ways to protect your long-term health. Regular, structured movement helps manage symptoms and minimise the effects of age and declining hormones.

Our women’s health physiotherapists guide you in building strength gradually, improving balance, and supporting pelvic health, all while helping you move comfortably and safely. We commonly assist women in this change of life stage with:

  • Bone density changes or early signs of osteoporosis
  • Vaginal dryness, discomfort, or pain with intimacy
  • General stiffness, joint pain, or loss of flexibility
  • Fatigue and difficulty maintaining exercise routines
  • Feelings of weakness or loss of balance
  • Uncertainty about safe movement or strength training

With the right guidance, you can stay active, protect your joints and bones, and feel more confident managing your symptoms.

Our women’s health physios stay up to date with the latest evidence on perimenopause and post menopause care. If you’d like to read more, the Australasian Menopause Society has some great resources.

What’s involved in a physiotherapy consultation?

Our consultations include a pelvic floor assessment. This is a thorough evaluation conducted by a specialised physiotherapist to understand your specific needs and develop an effective treatment plan for your postmenopausal symptoms. Here’s what to expect:

Initial Consultation

Your physiotherapist will discuss your symptoms, medical history, and goals.

Physical Examination

Depending on your symptoms, this may include assessing posture, pelvic alignment, abdominal muscles, and movement ranges.

Vaginal Examination

If related to your symptoms, an internal examination might be recommended to evaluate pelvic function. This is explained beforehand, and you can choose whether to proceed or withdraw at any time.

Personalised Plan

Post-assessment, you'll receive education on the findings and a tailored treatment plan.

Our goal is to ensure you feel comfortable and supported throughout the process, aiming for the best possible outcomes.

Management of menopause and postmenopause symptoms FAQs

You are considered postmenopausal once you have gone twelve months without a menstrual period. Blood tests measuring oestrogen and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels can help confirm this if required. Your GP can assist with testing and diagnosis.

Perimenopause is the phase before menopause, when hormone levels begin to fluctuate and menstrual cycles may become irregular. During this stage, you may notice symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep disturbances, mood changes, or shifts in cycle length.

If you are unsure whether you are perimenopausal or postmenopausal, our women’s health physiotherapists can help you understand what your body is experiencing and help you manage your symptoms. If you’d like to research before your session, we recommend this menopause fact sheet from the Australasian Menopause Society.

If you’re experiencing new or worsening pelvic floor symptoms, pain, stiffness, or difficulty maintaining strength, a women’s health physiotherapist can help at any stage, whether you’re perimenopause or feeling the effects of menopause itself.

The decline in oestrogen that occurs after menopause accelerates bone loss, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fracture. Physiotherapy-led strength and weight-bearing exercise can slow this process and improve balance to reduce fall risk.

Consider your symptoms and how they are affecting your daily life currently. You may like to keep a diary of your symptoms and your daily habits. Bringing a list of your questions and concerns can also be beneficial. Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement.
