Pregnancy physiotherapy FAQs
How do I know if I need pregnancy physiotherapy?
We will always recommend that prevention is better than cure and specialised pregnancy physiotherapy will help prevent issues in the future. For women who are experiencing discomfort or dysfunction such as incontinence, abdominal separation, or pelvic girdle pain, we can help restore function.
I’ve had a C-section, what can a physio do for me?
Physiotherapy can be highly beneficial after a C-section. Our pregnancy physiotherapy and exercise physiology services can help you with pain management, core strengthening, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and a safe return to activity.
Can abdominal separation heal on its own?
For most women, abdominal separation improves naturally over the first 12 weeks after birth as our hormones normalise and our connective tissue returns to a pre pregnancy make up. This is the best time to maximize care of our abdominals to allow this process to take place. Wearing a supportive device like a binder, tubigrip, or a support garment, gentle movement, abdominal exercises, and good postural habits are important during this period to help the normal change happening after pregnancy. In some cases, the separation remains or causes ongoing issues like core weakness, back pain, or pelvic floor dysfunction.
Targeted physiotherapy can help improve muscle function and restore strength, even months or years postpartum. Learn more about abdominal separation.
Is it safe to exercise while pregnant?
Yes, it is generally safe and highly beneficial to exercise during pregnancy.
Our women’s health physiotherapists and exercise physiologists can tailor a safe and effective exercise program to your specific needs, ensuring both you and your baby remain healthy.
Pelvic health physiotherapy FAQs
How do I know if need pelvic floor physiotherapy?
You might benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy if you experience any of the following:
- Difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels
- Pelvic pain or discomfort
- Pain during intercourse
If any of these sound familiar, it’s time to consider booking an appointment. We can provide a thorough assessment and a personalised treatment plan.
Is pelvic floor physiotherapy only for postnatal women?
No. Pelvic floor issues can occur at any age. It’s more common during pregnancy, after childbirth, around menopause, or even without those factors.
Can physiotherapy help with bladder leakage or prolapse?
Yes, by assessing the contributing factors to your issues we can help target treatment which may include a range of therapies including retraining the pelvic floor muscles.
Perimenopause physiotherapy FAQs
Can physiotherapy help during perimenopause or menopause?
Absolutely. Hormonal changes can affect your joints, muscles, and overall strength. Physiotherapy can help manage stiffness, improve bone density, reduce pain, and maintain mobility through targeted exercise and movement strategies.
Why am I feeling more joint pain during menopause?
As estrogen levels decrease, tissues that support your joints can become less elastic, contributing to stiffness and discomfort. Gentle strengthening and mobility exercises can help maintain flexibility and relieve pain.
Return to exercise FAQs
Should I see an exercise physiologist or physiotherapist first?
This depends on your current concerns and goals. If you have any musculoskeletal, pelvic, or injury-related concerns, we recommend seeing a physiotherapist first for a comprehensive assessment. If you don’t have specific concerns and are returning to exercise more generally, an exercise physiologist may be appropriate.
If you’re unsure, please contact us and we can help guide you. Our physiotherapists and exercise physiologists work closely together, and in some cases, a combination of both may be the most effective approach to support your return to exercise.
What exercise is safe for me?
This is highly dependent on the person, and what is appropriate or safe will vary greatly. The best thing you can do is book an appointment with a physio to assess your fitness and musculoskeletal health.
