Perimenopause is the lead-up to menopause and can last from 2 to 8 years.

This is a time of transition for women, and with it can come a mix of physical, mental, and emotional changes. Some days, these changes might feel manageable. Other days, they might disrupt your routine and can feel overwhelming. However, be assured, there are ways to support your body and feel more comfortable during peri menopause.

At North West Healthy Women, we provide practical physiotherapy to help you feel more at ease in your body. Whether you’re navigating new symptoms or looking for ways to support your long-term health, we’re here to help.

Common peri menopause symptoms

  • Irregular and heavier than usual periods
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Mood swings, anxiety and depression
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Brain fog, difficulty concentrating or remembering things
  • Sleep disturbances and fatigue
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Weakness in the pelvic floor muscles
  • Weight gain and changes in body composition

What’s involved in a physiotherapy consultation?

A pelvic floor assessment is a thorough evaluation conducted by a specialised physiotherapist to understand your specific needs and develop an effective treatment plan. Here’s what to expect:

Initial Consultation

Your physiotherapist will discuss your symptoms, medical history, and goals.

Physical Examination

Depending on your symptoms, this may include assessing posture, pelvic alignment, abdominal muscles, and movement ranges.

Vaginal Examination

If related to your symptoms, an internal examination might be recommended to evaluate pelvic function. This is explained beforehand, and you can choose whether to proceed or withdraw at any time.

Personalised Plan

Post-assessment, you'll receive education on the findings and a tailored treatment plan.

Our goal is to ensure you feel comfortable and supported throughout the process, aiming for the best possible outcomes.

Perimenopause FAQs

Perimenopause affects more than just your hormones—it impacts muscles, bones, joints, bladder control, and overall movement. A women’s health physio can help you manage symptoms, strengthen your body, and feel more confident as things change.

Our women’s health physiotherapists work with you to improve your pelvic floor function and provide guidance on lifestyle adjustments for this period of change.

Consider your symptoms and how they are affecting your daily life currently. You may like to keep a diary of your symptoms and how they impact you. Bringing a list of your questions and concerns can also be beneficial. Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement.
If you are comfortable attending your appointment, our physios are also comfortable to continue with your session. If you feel more comfortable to wait until your period is over, we can also easily reschedule for another date.

No, you don’t need a referral or doctor’s clearance to see us. Our experienced practitioners are skilled in managing various medical conditions and will ensure all activities are safe and suitable for your situation. We collaborate closely with Brisbane Pelvic Floor Specialists and Gynecologists and are happy to coordinate with them to support your rehabilitation.
