Ask most women what remedial massage is, and they’ll describe something close to a relaxation treatment a bit of tension relief, an hour to switch off and a nice to do but not essential.
Remedial massage does more for women’s health than most people realise. The right treatment at the right stage, whether that’s pregnancy, postnatal recovery, or perimenopause can reduce pain, restore movement, support your nervous system, and help your body recover.
At North West Healthy Women, this level of care is now available with Jess, a clinically trained remedial massage therapist who works specifically with women across every stage of life, from preconception through to menopause.
What is remedial massage for women?
The difference between remedial massage and a standard relaxation treatment comes down to intent. Relaxation massage is about how you feel on the table. Remedial massage is about what’s actually going on in your body.
A thorough history comes before any hands-on work. What are your symptoms, when did they start, what makes them worse, what have you already tried? From there, the assessment happens through touch, identifying where tension originates, not just where it’s expressed. That distinction matters. Treating where you feel the pain and treating where the pain is coming from are often two very different things.
Remedial massage at each stage of a woman’s life
Fertility and preconception
Chronic tension, an overloaded nervous system, and disrupted sleep all affect how your body feels during this time, and bodywork is one of the more effective ways to address them. Remedial massage in the preconception phase supports nervous system regulation, reduces accumulated muscular tension, and gives your body a better baseline to work from. It’s gentle, intentional work that complements whatever else you’re doing to prepare.
Pregnancy massage in North Brisbane
Most pregnant women are managing at least one of the following: back pain, hip pain, pelvic pressure, sciatic discomfort, swelling or headaches. The standard advice is often to rest and wait it out. For many women, that’s not enough.
Many massage clinics won’t see pregnant women until they’re past 10 or 12 weeks. Jess isn’t one of them. With specific training in pregnancy massage, she welcomes women at every stage, first trimester included, so you don’t have to wait out the early weeks without support.
Pregnancy massage, delivered by a therapist with specific training in how to position and support a pregnant body, can make a significant difference to how you feel week to week. The treatment adapts to your trimester. Bolsters and pillows replace the need to lie face down. The focus shifts to whatever your body is dealing with right now, whether that’s upper back tension from postural changes, sciatic pain from pelvic pressure, or swelling in the lower legs. The goal is genuine relief, not just an hour of lying still.
Postnatal recovery
The physical demands of the postpartum period are significant and chronically underacknowledged. Feeding and carrying a newborn loads the neck, shoulders, and upper back in ways that accumulate fast. Broken sleep prevents proper recovery. The body is simultaneously healing from birth and being asked to perform at full capacity.
Postnatal massage works on the tension that builds through all of this. It helps women reconnect with their bodies after birth, restore physical awareness, and find some relief from the muscular load of early parenthood. If you have bub with you, they can come into the treatment room.
C-section scar massage
C-section scar work is one of Jess’ areas of specialist expertise.
Then there’s how the scar looks and feels. The bulge or overhang that can develop above a c-section scar, sometimes called the c-section shelf, is one of the most common reasons women seek out this work. It’s often caused by the scar tissue underneath tethering to the layers above it, pulling the skin in and letting the tissue above sit forward. Targeted scar massage works to release those adhesions, which can improve the mobility, sensitivity, and appearance of the area over time.
It’s not uncomfortable, and it’s not something that needs to happen immediately after surgery. Women benefit from this treatment months and years down the track. If your c-section scar has never been properly addressed, it’s worth knowing that option exists.
Perimenopause and beyond
Hormonal changes in perimenopause affects more than mood and cycle regularity. Muscles hold tension differently. Joints become less forgiving. Sleep gets harder. The nervous system responds to stress more acutely. Women in this stage of life often find that what worked for their body five years ago simply doesn’t cut it anymore.
Remedial massage and lymphatic drainage both offer meaningful support during this transition. The approach in perimenopause and beyond looks different to postnatal work or pregnancy massage, and it should. What matters is treatment that responds to what the body is doing, not a standard protocol applied regardless of stage.
How remedial massage fits into integrated women’s health care
Remedial massage delivered inside a women’s health clinic is different to remedial massage delivered in isolation. At North West Healthy Women, Jess works in the same space as physiotherapists and exercise physiologists. That means if your treatment surfaces something that would benefit from a different kind of support, a in-house referral happens. Your history doesn’t need to be repeated. Your practitioners can communicate directly. Care that’s connected tends to produce better outcomes than care that isn’t.
