Pregnancy brings so many changes, some exciting, some unexpected, and some that can be a little uncomfortable. Whether you’re trying to conceive, newly pregnant, or navigating the early postpartum months, pregnancy physiotherapy can support your body through each stage.
At North West Healthy Women, we design our pregnancy physiotherapy services to meet you where you’re at, help you understand what’s happening, and support you with practical, evidence-based care that feels right for you.
Preconception: physio and pregnancy preparation
Physio and pregnancy go hand in hand, even before conception. A pre-pregnancy physio assessment is a gentle way to identify and address any pelvic health concerns early on, so your body is better prepared for the months ahead.
You might benefit from a preconception physiotherapy appointment if you:
- Have a history of pelvic floor symptoms (such as leaking, straining, or prolapse)
- Experience pain with periods, intercourse, or tampon use
- Are managing a chronic pain condition or past injury that affects your hips, pelvis, or lower back
Whichever stage of mum-to-be you’re in, our women’s physiotherapists are here to help you feel more at ease as your body changes.
First trimester: managing early pregnancy changes
Even in the earliest weeks of pregnancy, your body starts to change. Hormones can affect joint mobility, and changes in posture or movement patterns may cause discomfort sooner than expected.
Pregnancy physiotherapy can help address:
- Pelvic girdle pain
- Lower back or hip pain
- Early pelvic floor changes, such as leaking when you sneeze or morning sickness-related pressure on the pelvic floor
Physiotherapy can help by providing education, gentle exercises, manual therapy if needed, and support for your pelvic floor. You might also choose to join one of our pregnancy-safe classes to stay active in a way that feels comfortable and supported.
Second trimester: easing discomfort as your baby grows
As your pregnancy progresses, it’s common for earlier symptoms to change or become more noticeable. Your growing baby may place more pressure on your pelvic floor and affect your posture, making things like walking, sleeping, and moving around feel a little harder.
Our pregnancy physiotherapy services support pelvic floor health, manage musculoskeletal discomfort, and help you stay active with safe, targeted exercise. We can also advise on modifications to your usual routine to help you feel stronger and more comfortable as your body adapts.
Third trimester: preparing for birth
Pregnancy physiotherapy can play an important role in birth preparation, whether you’re planning a vaginal delivery or a caesarean. Around this time, we may recommend a pelvic floor assessment to understand how your muscles are functioning and to practice “bearing down” (pushing) for birth. It’s common for this action to feel unfamiliar, so it can be helpful to work on coordination and pelvic floor strength before labour begins.
From 34 weeks onward, we can also guide you through perineal massage to help prepare the tissues of the perineum for birth. Our pregnancy physiotherapists also offer support with breath work, positioning, and pain relief techniques for labour.
Post natal: supporting recovery and return to exercise
The postnatal period is unique for every woman, but physiotherapy for pregnancy recovery can help you navigate it with confidence.
Around 6-8 weeks after birth, we recommend a postnatal physio appointment to:
- Check pelvic floor recovery and muscle coordination
- Assess any pelvic symptoms like leaking, heaviness, or pain
- Review your abdominal muscles and guide you through safe core strengthening
- Support caesarean scar healing with massage techniques if needed
- Help you manage any aches or pains from pregnancy, birth, or feeding
We also work with you to create a safe, tailored return to exercise program to support your postpartum recovery without putting strain on healing tissues. This may include joining our clinic-run postnatal Pilates classes.
