If you’re struggling with prolapse, you might not know what options are available for the management and treatment of your symptoms. At North West Healthy Women, we support and work with you to find the best options to help you manage your prolapse and associated symptoms.
How can a physio help with prolapse?
A women’s health physio works with you to identify the factors contributing to your prolapse, including assessing your pelvic floor muscles and pelvic support structures and teaching you simple lifestyle tweaks that can make a big difference in managing prolapse. And if it’s right for you, we can fit a pessary for additional support.
Non-surgical prolapse treatment: can physiotherapy fully resolve prolapse?
While physiotherapy may not “cure” prolapse in the traditional sense, it can dramatically reduce symptoms and improve your quality of life. The goal of treatment is to manage and mitigate the effects of prolapse by identifying contributing physical, lifestyle and behavioural factors, which may include addressing pelvic floor muscle weakness or dysfunction
Many women find that with the right combination of therapies, they can maintain an active, fulfilling life, and for many, delay or eliminate the need for surgical intervention.
How long does it take to see results from prolapse physiotherapy?
Pelvic floor function is one aspect of prolapse management, and paired with positive lifestyle changes, can have a lasting impact.
Like any muscle training, it usually takes up to three months to see noticeable improvements, though many women start noticing benefits sooner.
Some women even begin to feel better as soon as the first session. Small tweaks to how you breathe, how you sit, and how you go to the bathroom can reduce the symptoms of prolapse.
A pessary is a device designed to support prolapsed organs and reduce prolapse symptoms and the risk of prolapse progression. If a pessary is advised for you, your Physiotherapist will discuss this with you.
