Prolapse happens when a pelvic organ sits lower in the pelvis than it once did.

This can be influenced by many factors, including pelvic floor strength, lifestyle habits, a history of straining, genetics, and menopause.

At North West Healthy Women, our experienced team provides personalised physiotherapy to help you feel more at ease. We specialise in all types of pelvic organ prolapse, including uterine, bladder, and rectal prolapse.

We offer physiotherapy for all stages of prolapse

Prolapse physiotherapy can be helpful at every stage. In the early stages, the right guidance can help you manage your symptoms and improve pelvic floor function. If surgery is needed, physiotherapy plays a key role in rebuilding strength and confidence afterward.

Wherever you’re at, we’re here to support you.

Common prolapse symptoms

  • Pelvic pressure, heaviness, or fullness
  • Vaginal bulge
  • Changes in bladder or bowel emptying
  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse
  • Persistent or recurring low back pain

What’s involved in a physiotherapy consultation?

A pelvic floor assessment is a thorough evaluation conducted by a specialised physiotherapist to understand your specific needs and develop an effective treatment plan. Here’s what to expect:

Initial Consultation

Your physiotherapist will discuss your symptoms, medical history, and goals.

Physical Examination

Depending on your symptoms, this may include assessing posture, pelvic alignment, abdominal muscles, and movement ranges.

Vaginal Examination

If related to your symptoms, an internal examination might be recommended to evaluate pelvic function. This is explained beforehand, and you can choose whether to proceed or withdraw at any time.

Personalised Plan

Post-assessment, you'll receive education on the findings and a tailored treatment plan.

Our goal is to ensure you feel comfortable and supported throughout the process, aiming for the best possible outcomes.

Prolapse physiotherapy FAQs

A women’s health physio works with you to identify the factors contributing to your prolapse, and help you manage it in a way that fits your lifestyle. This may include: pelvic floor exercises, lifestyle adjustments, and a pessary (if appropriate).

Consider your symptoms and how they are affecting your daily life currently. You may like to keep a diary of your symptoms and how they impact you. Bringing a list of your questions and concerns can also be beneficial. Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement.

If you are comfortable to attend, our physios are also comfortable to continue with your session. If you feel more comfortable to wait until your period is over, we can easily reschedule for another date.

No, you don’t need a referral or your doctor’s clearance to see us. Rest assured, our experienced practitioners are well-versed in handling various medical conditions and will ensure that all activities are safe and appropriate for your specific situation. We work closely with Brisbane Pelvic Floor Specialists and Gynecologists, and we are more than happy to be guided and work with them, to help with your rehabilitation.
